HOW TO ORDER

Just contact us (see the "Contact Us" page on this website). Then we can discuss your needs in detail and prepare to serve you to the very best of our ability! We have a great deal of experience in matching a player with an instrument. Ask specifically to speak with Jan regarding advice on choosing an instrument.

Please also check the "Rentals" page, since you may want to purchase some of the optional enhancements listed there.

If you want a special accessory, such as a particular case, please keep in mind that we can supply many items that we do not have in stock, just ask! See our Accessories page for more information.

We can ship several instruments to you on try-out, no obligation. We ship many instruments each day with UPS. It works very well!

Before you order, please be sure to read the section on Ethics on our "Policies" page as well as How to buy a violin.

One of Gainesville Violins's claims to fame is that we are a niche business that adds considerable value to each and every instrument in our workshop. We don't just grab them from a warehouse or a shelf and ship them like a Walmart. We work on them meticulously (see the "Workshop" page on this website). That is why -

  • they sound so great and are so comfortably playable
  • we can give a lifetime warranty
  • our customers rave (see below as well as on the "Rentals" and "Customers" pages on this website).

All of this takes TIME, EFFORT and EXPERTISE. Therefore we request our customers kindly to please allow us ample time to provide you with an extraordinarily great-sounding instrument produced according to the very best of our ability.

Also, to be fair, we must follow the "First come, first served" principle. Orders are processed and shipped in the order in which they have been received. Remember that we have a world-wide clientele.

Accordingly, please place your order well ahead of the time that you will need it. Please allow up to three weeks, and sometimes even longer, for delivery. (In true emergencies, and for professional players and teachers, we can make exceptions.)

Thanks so much for understanding!

INTRODUCTION: INTERNET AND
OTHER CHEAP INSTRUMENTS

Many people buy "cheap" violins on the Internet, in general music stores or on popular auction sites such as eBay. This usually turns into a disaster and causes disappointment.

Gainesville Violins fits all their violins up properly and modify them, adding considerable value to them and making sure they sound well. They all get played several times and then re-adjusted for best tone and playability before they leave the shop.

Plus, Gainesville Violins gives great guarantees and aftercare. (See our "Policies" page.) If you are not completely happy with your purchase, you may return it for a full refund. We stand by our customers and are available for them. We service our violins. With us, you can always trade your violin in for a better one. (However we don't "buy back" instruments.)

Internet and auction site sellers give none of these benefits. They are often untrained and have no specialist knowledge or experience. They often disappear when they have your money and then you are on your own! We recommend that you buy or rent only from legitimate and ethical specialist full-service violin shops.

INTERNET AUCTION SITE WOES

Tim W wrote via email (2004): "Hello Gainesville Violins, I wanted to learn to play the violin and so I made the mistake of purchasing one off of eBay, it was very inexpensive and brand new. I don't know if it is me or the instrument but I can't seem to produce any good sound. My question to you is this: Will a better quality instrument be more conducive to learning to play? This includes the bow as well. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated."

Jan tests and adjusts each violin several times before it leaves the shop. The above is a typical complaint. We get many similar ones.
The solution is simple: Contact Gainesville
Violins
up front. We'll help you!

The Humble Antonio Vivaldi Violin Keeps On Getting High Praise:

Michael Burkhart wrote (email Feb 2005): "I want to thank you so much for the absolutely beautiful 1/4-size Vivaldi I purchased for Natalie. I have never seen my 6-year-old daughter more excited about anything in her life. She loves her new violin and she cares for it like a pet. It thrills me to see her so happy.
I am totally happy with my purchase and the service you provided me. If you have a full-size Vivaldi outfit available, I am interested in purchasing it for Lisa.
Thank you so very much once again, Warm regards, - Michael Burkhart
."

The purchase price structure of our rental instruments (Antonio Vivaldi and Fritz violins - see No 2 above and No 5 below) has been constructed in such a way as to ease customers into a two great ranges of entry-level instruments painlessly. Our rental credit system (see "Rentals" page) and our trade-in policy also help to achieve this end. It is likewise easy to transfer from one line of instruments to another.

"It seems that everytime I hear a small violin that sounds like an actual instrument instead of a box with rubber bands, it came from you!  It's so wonderful that you rent violins that sound good.  So many students struggle to get a good sound from instruments that don't really have any sound to give.

I will be starting a violin program at Providence School. I would like for my students to get their violins from you."

SOME PANIS ANGELICUS CUSTOMERS:

Aaron Colverson (currently at Stetson University, DeLand, FL) bought a Panis Angelicus 1679 "Hellier" reproduction Stradivarius . He wrote (email 2005):

"Gainesville Violins has given me the best instrument I've ever owned. Its beauty and the gorgeous sound it produces make it a most pleasing violin. When I first saw it in the shop I loved its appearance (who wouldn't!). Playing it made me enjoy it even more. I've owned the violin for about three years now and probably won't purchase another instrument ever because I am so pleased with it. My parents and teachers all agree that this instrument is truly great and reflects the fine
quality of the instruments sold at Gainesville Violins. I am very grateful for all the help and support I have received from Jan and Anna.  The Van Rooyens are a priceless addition to the music community in Gainesville and everyone acquainted with them would be deeply in regret if they were to leave. Thank you for everything Jan and Anna, you guys are the best!"
Erika Webb wrote (email 2005): "I bought a Panis Angelicus 1679 'Hellier' reproduction Stradivarius from you in the summer of 2001. I’ve been incredibly happy with the instrument over the past four years. Thank you so much for providing musicians like myself
with such lovely instruments
."
Tricia Hardy wrote: "The violin I purchased from Gainesville Violins has an incredible sound. The quality is outstanding and the price was just right. I feel confident encouraging other musicians to do business with Jan and Anna, they understand how to meet specific needs of musicians."
Suliman Tekalli won a scholarship to Juilliard on his Panis Angelicus (see more below). Tricia Hardy bought a Panis Angelicus 1740 Guarneri del Gesu copy for professional use. She is the former Music Manager of the Imperial Orchestra, Co-Director of the Polk Country Youth Orchestra and taught at Rochelle School of the Arts, Lakeland, FL (2004). Description

Copies of Paganini's "Il Cannone" can be ordered!

In making these violins, Jan and his associate luthier use various books, measurements, full-size plans and full-size color pictures of the original violins as well as dozens of recordings made with them. Often they have studied the originals in real life.

The finish of the violins looks remarkably like the originals. The violins have the appearance of 250- year-old instruments.Virtually every dent, scratch and wear mark
is there!

Jan applies his home-made antique-recipe Italian varnish in many layers, each one of which is rubbed down carefully, resulting in an amazing sheen and patina.

Tonally the violins are amazing. They are powerful and project extremely well, sounding remarkably like the originals.

Completion of a violin takes 4-8 weeks. Thereafter a lot of time is spent on its acoustical adjustment in order to achieve just the right sound.

These violins are eminently suitable for serious professional concerto performance.

SINCE 2006: ON SPECIAL REQUEST FROM TEACHERS AND PARENTS OF GIFTED CHILDREN, JAN AND ASSOCIATES CAN MAKE FRACTIONAL SIZES AS WELL! CONTACT JAN FOR INFORMATION ON TURN-AROUND TIME AND PRICING.

1. USED VIOLINS

Gainesville Violins has many  "used" instruments. Some were traded in or bought from customers, while others come out of our rental program. These instruments may be one, two, five, ten or more years old. They are essentially "modern" instruments that have been pre-owned and used. They have all been refurbished by Gainesville Violins. All of them are structurally sound and acoustically excellent. They are covered by the same guarantees as all instruments from Gainesville Violins, yet they may represent a substantial financial saving. Since they come and go unpredictably, it is not realistic to picture them in this catalog. Please contact us to enquire about the availability of used instruments. Satisfaction guaranteed.

2. VINTAGE VIOLINS

"Vintage" instruments are old used instruments that are not yet 100 years old and which can accordingly not accurately be called "antiques", even though some of them may be very desirable. Gainesville Violins can offer many vintage German and French violins of excellent quality. These vintage instruments are available from $3,000. Call for more information.

3. ANTIQUE VIOLINS

The definition of "antique" is "An item which is at least 100 years old and is collectible or desirable due to rarity, condition, utility, or some other unique feature." Gainesville Violins regularly has an excellent selection of beautifully restored antique instruments. Many students and teachers prefer antique instruments to new ones and Gainesville Violins is there to fill this demand. Call us re availability ... these instruments sell as fast as they are made available! Like all instruments, these carry our lifetime guarantee re quality of material and workmanship. Price from $3,500.

4. "THE VAULT COLLECTION"

Jan and Anna have been collecting fine antique violins for more than 25 years in many countries and still do. This extensive collection of top quality antique violins is partly kept off-premises and is called "The Vault Collection".

Towards the end of 2004 Gainesville Violins started for the first time ever to restore and sell antique instruments from The Vault Collection! They are mostly German and French antique violins, with some Italians. All of those offered for purchase have been fully restored and are in outstanding condition structurally, tonally and cosmetically. They are wonderful instruments for prize-winning advanced students, young professionals and sophisticated teacers. Rarely are such fine antique instruments to be found at such reasonable prices.

These instruments produce a powerful soloist concert tone of refined and noble quality and are among the best available on the American market today, at amazingly reasonable prices. Don't miss the boat ... reserve yours now! They won't be available forever.

These instruments are rare. They are the choicest of the choice . There are no visible repairs. Only 2 to 3 can be made available per month. They usually sell within a week after arriving on the shop shelves. Contact us now!

Prices start at $4,500. During 2007 we also had available an 1850 Gagliano for $50,000, a 1905 Collin-Mezin for $20,000 and a classic Voirin bow for $30,000.

Fine and rare antique German violins
from the "The Vault Collection":

Tiffanie Webster and her teacher, Diane Marshall (Tallahassee 2004), came to Gainesville Violins to select a "Vault Collection" antique violin for Tiffanie. They selected the fine 1896 Johann Pauli (from Hamm, Germany, pictured above) for Tiffanie. BUT it did not end there. Diane was so impressed with an 1897 Oscar Herrman Seidel (Dresden, Germany) that she bought it for herself! The two violins were sold for under $4,000 each.

Tiffanie Webster wrote (March 2005): "I had a violinist from the Kiev Orchestra stay with me this week. She enjoyed playing my instrument and was very impressed with its character. She said that an instrument of this high quality and beautiful sound could easily have sold for as much $7,000 in Europe. Instruments of this quality are not readily available in the Ukraine even for such gifted musicians. Thanks for blessing us with such wonderful instruments.  After hearing her play my violin so well I have an even deeper appreciation for it and for the great service you provide."

Fine and rare antique French violins at Gainesville Violins:

A violin by Buthod, Paris 1898 (right).

Gainesville Violins has many customers playing rare and fine antique French violins. These include instruments by Buthod and Jerome Thibouville-Lamy in the Alachua Youth Orchestra (ACYO). Some customers who play on these instruments include Amelyse and Ian Arroyo, and Diana Montoya-Fontalvo (see pictures below). In 2009, Gainesville Violins sold a Collin Mezin violin with certificates from the great French maker, Bernard Millant.

The violins all have a typically French red-brown varnish and a powerful yet noble and refined tone.

"My daughter Amanda rented a 15.5" William viola from you this past Saturday when you came to FSU. She was very impressed with everything. When she went to school today, her teacher, Chris Miller, said 'Wow, you've been practicing'. After awhile he noticed it was a new viola. After school she went for her lessons with Mrs Werdesheim and she said the exact same thing. It was too funny. The teacher really liked the viola and played it for a while. Thank you for giving Amanda such a wonderful instrument!"

Shelby Christopher from Grand Prairie TX received a 13" William viola. Her father, Mark Christopher, wrote (email 2005):

"We received the viola and I had my daughter's teacher look it over and play it.  She was very impressed.  She told us it was a beautiful instrument and that my daughter was very lucky to have  such a quality viola.  Thank you so much for sending such a wonderful instrument.  You are great people to work with.  Thank you for the necklace as well. My daughter has worn it ever since she received it. Thank you again for partnering with us to help my daughter develop a love and appreciation for music."

CRISIS AVERTED!
The Paris Piano Trio and the Ysaye Quartet played jointly in Gainesville on February 8, 2004. The violist (left) was forced by circumstances to leave his $100,000 viola at JFK airport in New York. Gainesville Violins (somewhat red-faced) loaned him a 16.5" St Cecilia worth only $4,500.00. However, the recital went fantastically well and he was extremely happy with the power and quality of the St Cecilia!

"Thank you very much for the use of such a beautiful cello. It has a gorgeous sound and feels much like my own, I couldn't have asked for anything better. The concert went great."

Mark Tanner and the "Sleeping Beauty" copy:

In 2006 Mark Tanner, renowned cellist - see www.buzzardsbaymusicfest.com/.../artists.html - needed a cello for his performance of the St Saens Cello Concerto. He chose our copy of the "Sleeping Beauty". (Mark's own cello is a Vuillaume)

Meagan wrote (2005):
"I just wanted to tell you how much I love my cello!  The sound is beautiful and I receive compliments all the time.  A professor of cello at a university here in Florida takes pride in being able to hear a cello and guess what the cost was.  My cello from you fooled her completely.  She guessed several thousand dollars more than what the cost was. I was very happy that she was so impressed with the sound from it.  I am always appreciative of the manner you and Anna receive my family.  It is not as though we are
customers but as friends. Thank you so
much for your fine work and kindness."
Granger wrote (2005):
"Thank you for finding me the right cello.  I really like the sound and how it looks.  You took the time to get one that had more flaming on it because that is what I wanted.  You always go out of your way to help us out and do your best when we have to have work done.  Even when you put strings on the cello you use the best. I must confess that I like going to your shop and enjoy the great snacks Miss Anna shares with us.  You are a cool guy and I appreciate the time you take with us.  I like my cello very much."

Gino Souto, Brandon, FL

Gino Souto (2005) from Brandon, FL, and the fine 1930's German cello he bought from Gainesville Violins. Gino's father, Ramiro Souto, wrote to Gainesville Violins (2004):

"Carlos (Gino's teacher) feels that the vintage cello you have provided is just what Gino needed to upgrade from his 'Chinese Cigar Box' and he feels that the instrument has an exquisite sound. Therefore we have a closed deal. I have taken the liberty to copy this e-mail to Mrs. Denise Travers at Tampa Bay Youth Orchestras. She gave me your name and I feel very lucky that I have personally met you and purchased such a fine instrument from you. I feel very happy with the final results. Thank you for everything!"
Later on, Gino's father wrote again: "Some news on Gino: Gino is now first chair in the Tampa Bay Junior Philharmonic out of 18 cellists. He is also second chair in the Bloomingdale High School Philharmonic Orchestra. This is the first time in the school history that a freshman has made it into this position. Gino claims that your cello has vastly helped in these feats. We are very happy."
Oops, Gino's vintage cello developed a crack! Gainesville Violins promptly fixed it. Gino's father wrote (2005) to Denise Travers, then Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Youth Orchestras:

"Dear Denise: Back in December 2004, Gino's teacher noticed a slight hair crack on the body of the cello that we had purchased from Gainesville Violins. I chose to take the cello to Mr. Jan personally.

Within two weeks the cello was repaired. Gino and I traveled to Gainesville Violins and I must say we were treated like kings. We were invited to lunch and Mr. Jan spent quite a lot of time talking with Gino about Gino's plans and expectations and he gave him quite a lot of tips.

Gainesville Violins repaired the cello so that it is almost impossible to see the repair, and the sound ... OH WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT IN SOUND!!!!!! Mr. Jan did not charge anything for the repairs. He explained that all of his instruments carry a lifetime warranty for structural integrity. VERY IMPRESSIVE! How do you say: Personal touches, service, integrity, professionalism? ... Gainesville Violins!!!

Thanks for inviting them to the Tampa Bay Youth Orchestras. I personally feel that anyone dealing with them in any matter will be rewarded positively."

Rebecca Montgomery, Inverness, FL

Rebecca with the rescued cello.

Rebecca also owns several violins.

Rebecca Montgomery of Inverness FL bought a cello on the Internet. It turned out to be unplayable. One violin shop told her that it was irreparable, unfixable. The Internet seller refused to take it back. Rebecca finally brought it to Gainesville Violins where Jan worked on it and saved it.

Rebecca wrote (2004):

"I LOVE the work you did on my cello! I am so happy with it I don't want to put it down. I was so surprised how quickly you finished it, I was expecting it to take weeks, even months. The sound is BEAUTIFUL and the new bridge is great. Your shop is the greatest! I hope to own one just like it someday."

Brooks Popwell, Greenville SC (formerly of Jacksonville FL)

Brooks Popwell at his senior recital (2004) in Greenville SC where he now lives.

Brooks Popwell wrote (2001):

"Thank you so much for the wonderful bridge replacement on my cello. The new bridge looks marvellous and the string height is perfect. Also, I notice you stained and polished the fingerboard. It looks a LOT better. I really appreciate all you do for me and the rest of my family. Your love for music and zeal for quality is contageous. Keep up the good, no, wonderful work, and thanks a lot! Yours most sincerely, Brooks Popwell."

Later on (after an accident) Brooks wrote:

"You saved me! My cello has returned! The repaired gash on the side of it looks great, and it feels smoothed down with the cello. Also, I REALLY like the finish (French polishing) you applied to the cello. It all looks great. You did a wonderful job; I know the repair was worth a lot. Thank you for thinking of me and bringing the cello to the airport. I have really enjoyed playing it ever since. Thanks again Mr. Van Rooyen. You are a lifesaver! - Your friend and fellow musician, Brooks Popwell."
